L. McCarthy Downs, III, Senior Vice President (804) 344-3809

Mr. Downs has been the Manager of Anderson & Strudwick's Corporate Finance Department since 1990. During that time, he has arranged and managed offerings, both public and private, using a variety of debt and equity structures. Mr. Downs engages in raising funds for both domestic and international companies. Prior to 1990, Mr. Downs was employed by Scott & Stringfellow, Incorporated for seven years and was responsible for large tax-exempt debt offerings. Mr. Downs' most recent experience involves various innovative structures for both REITs and companies engaged in a variety of industries.

Mr. Downs received his B.S. in Business Administration from The Citadel and received his M.B.A. from The College of William and Mary. top

Rodney W. Martin, Senior Vice President (804) 344-3549

Mr. Martin’s primary role is new business development, relationship management, and investment banking transaction structure and execution. With over fifteen years in the financial services arena, Mr. Martin has experience in buy and sell side mergers and acquisitions, branch acquisitions and divestitures, capital planning and formation, strategic planning, asset/liability and risk management, loan review, and commercial credit.

Prior to joining Anderson & Strudwick, Mr. Martin was a Director with Sterne Agee & Leach and William R. Hough & Co. where he focused on the financial services industry. Mr. Martin was also a Managing Director at Baxter Fentriss, a nationally ranked investment banking firm. Prior to entering the investment banking field, Mr. Martin spent eight years directly in the commercial banking industry.

Mr. Martin graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a dual B.S. in Finance and Economics. He also received his M.S. in Finance, with honors, from Virginia Commonwealth University. top

 

Dan Gushman, Vice President (804) 344-3818

Mr. Gushman is responsible for merger and corporate finance analysis in the investment banking division. This responsibility includes strategic analysis of companies, coordination of private placement offerings, deal valuations, as well as buyer, seller, and industry research. Prior to joining Anderson & Strudwick, Mr. Gushman was a Bank and Thrift Analyst at SNL Financial, LC where he covered approximately 90 companies located throughout the United States. This position required detailed examination of the institutions financials, M&A activity, insider information, and corporate news for reporting purposes and research products.

Mr. Gushman received his M.B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and his B.A. from James Madison University. top

 

Michael E. Mendelson (Senior Vice President) (804) 237-5549

Mr. Mendelson joined Anderson & Strudwick in July 2008 from Ferris, Baker Watts (FBW) where he was involved in over 30 public and private financings which raised in excess of $4 billion.  Prior to joining FBW, Mr. Mendelson served as founder and CEO of a general management and information technology consultancy which serves property and casualty insurance clients in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean.  Over the course of nearly 15 years, Mr. Mendelson provided the strategic direction to lead his firm to both rapid growth and industry leading levels of profitability.  He sold his business to a publicly traded consultancy in 1997, but repurchased it in early 2001.  The business was sold a second time to a large privately held consultancy in mid-2003.  Mr. Mendelson was a recipient of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002. Mr. Mendelson is licensed by FINRA as both  a General Securities Representative (Series 7) and a General Securities Principal (Series 24).  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of Richmond and an MBA from the Wharton School.  Mr. Mendelson served on the executive committees of both the University of Richmond’s Board of Associates and The Sabot School.  Mr. Mendelson currently serves on the Board of Directors of Hecta Media (AIM: HCTA). top

J. Matthew Carr, (Vice President) (804) 344-3828

Mr. Carr joined Anderson & Strudwick in July 2008 from Ferris, Baker Watts (FBW). While at FBW, Mr. Carr worked on several transactions including a $75 million private placement for an Indian wind turbine manufacturer. Immediately prior to joining FBW, Mr. Carr was the Director of eCommerce and Web Sales for Circuit City.  Under his leadership, web sales grew 60% to over $1B in total sales.  For nearly 10 years, Mr. Carr has held several functional leadership positions in sales, marketing, and finance with leading technology companies including IBM, Crossroads Systems, and Dell Computer.  While at IBM, Mr. Carr was the Client Executive for New York City Government, responsible for RFPs and sales of all IBM hardware, software, and services into several government agencies, including the City’s office of the CIO.  Mr. Carr began his career with Amoco Oil working on supply and logistics where he reduced oil inventory reserves and working capital as well as secured and traded crude oil in the Gulf of Mexico for Amoco’s refinery supply. He earned a Masters of Business Administration degree and Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering both from the University of Notre Dame.  Mr. Carr is licensed by FINRA as a General Securities Representative (Series 7). top

Clayton M. Jones, (Vice President) (804) 344-3538

Mr. Jones joined Anderson & Strudwick in July 2008 from Ferris, Baker Watts (FBW). During his tenure at FBW, Mr. Jones was involved in over 15 public and private financings which raised in excess of $900 million.  Additionally, Mr. Jones has worked on an enterprise valuation and operational assessment of a manufacturer and supplier of homecare respiratory equipment. Before to joining FBW, Mr. Jones structured and underwrote over $500 million of debt and equity transactions in the Energy Industry with GE Energy Financial Services and is a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt.  Prior to joining GE, Mr. Jones served as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army for six years. He earned a Masters of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance from William and Mary, and a Bachelors of Science degree with a concentration in environmental science from The United States Military Academy.  Mr. Jones is licensed by FINRA as a General Securities Representative (Series 7). top
